The signatories, H2Cluster Finland, Hydrogen Sweden, the Estonian Association of Hydrogen Technologies, the Latvian Hydrogen Association, the Ukrainian Hydrogen Association, and Nexus in Poland, represent the forefront of hydrogen innovation in the region. This MoU underscores the shared commitment to unlocking the potential of clean hydrogen as a critical energy carrier, capable of meeting 15-20% of Europe’s future demand while generating new employment opportunities.

A new chapter in regional energy cooperation

The signing of the MoU builds on a long-standing collaboration within the Baltic Sea region’s energy and hydrogen sector, which began in 2016. Over the years, this cooperation has expanded to include more countries and organizations, reflecting the region’s growing importance in Europe’s transition to clean energy.

“The Baltic Sea region has the capacity to become a key supplier of clean hydrogen at a competitive cost, supporting Central Europe’s urgent need for affordable and sustainable energy solutions,” said Björn Aronsson, Managing Director, Hydrogen Sweden. “This agreement is a testament to our commitment to a greener, more secure energy future.”

The MoU will be carried out with inspiration from the BaSeH2 project, supported by funding from the Swedish Institute (SI).

Ukraine – a vital partner

Ukraine’s inclusion in this cooperation highlights its pivotal role in Europe’s energy landscape. As a country with vast renewable energy potential, Ukraine’s active participation underscores the region’s commitment to supporting energy security and economic recovery through sustainable solutions.

Ukraine’s partnership in this initiative is crucial for regional stability and innovation. Together, we can leverage our collective expertise to shape a sustainable future.

Strengthening energy security and creating jobs

The Baltic Sea region’s hydrogen potential can create thousands of new jobs across production, infrastructure, and distribution sectors. By aligning efforts, the region is poised to become a cornerstone of Europe’s clean energy supply chain.

”Hydrogen is the backbone of the changing European industrial landscape. By utilising the potential of the Baltic Sea region, we can ensure energy self-sufficiency and strengthen the economic and strategic autonomy of Europe. Achieving this requires a shared vision and strong cooperation”, says Simo Säynevirta, Chair of H2 Cluster Finland.

This MoU represents a decisive step toward building a robust, sustainable energy network within the Baltic Sea region, demonstrating the power of cross-border collaboration in addressing Europe’s energy challenges.

An invitation to stakeholders

As this initiative progresses, stakeholders from across the energy sector are invited to join upcoming events and initiatives tied to the Baltic Sea Hydrogen Council project. These events will provide opportunities to engage with key players, explore investment opportunities, and contribute to shaping the future of clean hydrogen in Europe.
