A clear hydrogen strategy is proposed by the Energy Agency

The Swedish Energy Agency has been commissioned by the government to coordinate the work with hydrogen in Sweden. The aim is to identify and remove obstacles to the use, production, distribution and storage of hydrogen and to integrate hydrogen into the energy system. The assignment consists of three parts: coordination, analysis and monitoring of the environment.

Main points of the report:

  • The role of hydrogen is growing: Hydrogen is becoming a key for the energy transition and reduced emissions.
  • Economic benefits: Local production and distribution via pipelines are cost-effective solutions.
  • Need for regulatory framework: An updated regulatory framework is required to accelerate infrastructure deployment.
  • Cooperation crucial: Close cooperation between actors and authorities is necessary.
  • Knowledge is spread: Increased understanding of the role of hydrogen is needed to promote acceptance.

The Energy Agency proposes:

  1. Clear national strategy: The state must provide clear guidance and create security for investments.
  2. Long-term coordination: Continued hydrogen coordination under the leadership of the Swedish Energy Agency.
  3. System study: Deepening the analysis of hydrogen’s socio-economic benefits.
  4. Faster legislation: Include hydrogen in the Natural Gas Act and adapt Swedish law to EU requirements.
  5. Extended support: Strengthen Klimatklivet and Industriklivet for long-term investments.

The industry association Hydrogen Sweden has long pursued the issue of a national hydrogen strategy. We welcome the Energy Agency’s report and look forward to continued cooperation to strengthen hydrogen’s role in Sweden’s energy system.
