New report: Clear potential for hydrogen and electrofuels in Sweden

A new report has identified a significant potential for the use of hydrogen and electrofuels in Sweden. The report, carried out by IVL Swedish Environmental Institute and other partners within Energiforsk’s program, highlights Sweden’s ability to become an exporter of hydrogen gas in the long term if current investments and trends continue.

However, the development of hydrogen is currently hindered by the lack of management tools and regulations. In order to achieve a leading role in the global transition to renewable energy, the need for the right strategies, support and political incentives to promote development is highlighted.

– With the right strategies and support, Sweden can take a prominent role in the global transition to renewable energy with the help of hydrogen and electrofuels, but this development depends on how we prioritize the resources needed in the climate transition and it is an issue that we must continue to discuss, says Mirjam Särnbratt, project manager at IVL Swedish Environmental Institute and author of the report.

The report focuses on increasing demand in the transport, steel and chemical industries and predicts a potential capacity shortage until 2035, with the possibility of overproduction thereafter. The challenges include infrastructure provision and electricity supply capacity.

Despite these obstacles, the possibility of environmentally friendly hydrogen production in Sweden is raised with its favorable energy mix. Sweden is seen as a potential exporter of hydrogen.

Moving forward, the need for continued research, political incentives, technology development and collaboration to realize Sweden’s potential in this area is emphasized.

The report has investigated the potential for hydrogen and electrofuels in the Swedish context through a compilation of literature and reports, as well as through interviews and scenario analyses. The report was carried out by IVL Swedish Environmental Institute, Rise, DNV and Sweco. The study has been carried out within Energiforsk’s program The role of hydrogen in the energy and climate transition and financed by the SIVL foundation and Energiforsk.
