New report from IVL on business models in hydrogen
Within the framework of the project “Hydrogen in the future energy system – business models and use in the transport sector”, IVL has released a partial report “Hydrogen in the Swedish transport sector – today and 2045”. The project collaborates closely with hydrogen actors, customers and investors active in the Swedish transport sector to validate the results. The overall aim of the project is to contribute to improved conditions for the conversion of the transport sector from fossil fuels to fossil-free hydrogen.
The report summarizes the first phase of the work in the project and takes an overall approach to the business model for hydrogen in the Swedish transport sector today with a focus on road transport. This is accompanied by an analysis of the future boundary conditions that hydrogen actors may operate within, which are used to adapt the business model to the conditions of 2045. In the first part of the work, the goal has been to map today’s business models for hydrogen in the transport sector, from a Swedish perspective and to put this in an international context, and it is these results that are reproduced in the report.
The report points to the need for strategic planning and flexibility in business models to manage uncertainties and optimize opportunities in the hydrogen market. See below a summary of the report’s conclusions:
- Today’s business model for hydrogen in the road transport sector is in an early establishment phase, where cooperation along the entire value chain, including with the customer, is central to being able to deliver hydrogen
- In the future (towards 2045), the business model will be affected by society’s transformation and offering a fossil-free fuel will be a smaller competitive advantage compared to the situation today
- Early players who have invested in hydrogen already today have done so because they believe in the technology and its role in the transition and see what value the investment will have in the future, rather than setting rigid demands for returns in the short term
- The project’s results can be used by hydrogen actors to develop their business model in the long term
