Klimatklivet provides support for twelve new hydrogen filling stations from Trelleborg to Kiruna

The Environmental Protection Agency grants climate investment support of SEK 224 million to twelve new hydrogen filling stations for heavy vehicles. The gas stations are part of the EU’s investment in a road network for sustainable transport in Europe.

With twelve new hydrogen filling stations from Trelleborg in the south to Kiruna in the north, it will be possible to drive hydrogen-powered transport through Sweden.

– The new hydrogen filling stations can be an important step forward towards fossil-free transport on Swedish roads. Hydrogen has an important role in the transition, not least for heavier vehicles that often drive long distances, says Angela Arokianathan, manager at Klimatklivet.

Hydrogen filling stations must be installed at least every twenty miles along the EU’s road network for sustainable transport according to the EU regulation AFIR, Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation. Part of the implementation in Sweden takes place through Klimatklivet, which this year has opened a first call specifically for hydrogen filling stations for heavy vehicles.

The production of renewable hydrogen is also important for the hydrogen filling stations to be put into operation. Klimatklivet has so far granted funds to 10 production facilities and more applications are currently being prepared.

– Right now, a lot is happening in parallel, both in the production and distribution of renewable hydrogen. It is crucial for hydrogen’s potential to be used for the conversion of heavy transport. Investment support such as Klimatklivet can give a cost-effective boost to development at this early stage in the hydrogen market, says Anna-Karin Nyström, unit manager for Klimatklivet industry at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

Facts about climate change

The climate step is support for physical investments that reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Everyone except private individuals can apply for the support. The funds come in part from the EU’s recovery fund, NextGenerationEU.

Investments in many different areas can receive support. The measures must contribute to reduced emissions of greenhouse gases and cannot be implemented without financial support.

Since its inception in 2015, Klimatklivet has distributed SEK 16.8 billion to companies, organizations and municipalities. Together with other financing, a total of SEK 40.3 billion has been invested to reduce emissions. Support is given to both large and small measures throughout the country.

Around SEK 957 million has been granted in support for hydrogen investments. Since 2020, the number of applications for investment support for hydrogen has increased in Klimatklivet.

Common hydrogen investments within Klimatklivet are, for example, production of renewable hydrogen, storage and distribution, including filling stations for hydrogen, filling stations along priority roads in Europe (calls for tenders on selected routes), conversion to renewable hydrogen in industrial processes, hydrogen as part of the process for electrofuels.
